Gear oil flung across the bed's underside. Seal + staked nut in hand. FSM preload band for the job is now on record (4.3–6.9 in-lb reused). Until fixed: diff level check every 2 weeks — and clear the axle breather during the job, a clogged breather is the known seal-killer.
Look at the color cold, FIRST. Green = prior-owner conversion: top with matching green, never pour red on it. The C1 flush converts the system back to RED for good.
Rear brakes (2010) → pull drums (C5). Battery age → free CCA test (B4). Timing-belt receipt → text Mason (D6). Recall 96V129000 (front suspension support, 95–96 only) → free VIN check at any Toyota dealer. Hub type (ADD vs manual) → look at the hub faces.

| Product | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lucas Oil Stabilizer | WASTE | Group I thickener; dilutes the additive pack (ZDDP, detergents) already in your oil |
| Techron (PEA) | WORTH IT | Best-evidenced fuel cleaner (AAA-tested, 19× fewer deposits vs min-detergent). 1–2×/yr is enough — this engine is PFI, not GDI |
| Seafoam in fuel (tank) | WORTH IT | Tank method only, 1–2×/yr. Skip the vacuum-line method unless chasing a carbon/idle complaint |
| Seafoam in oil | ONLY IF | Short pre-drain flush for suspected sludge. Never a leave-in — it’s a solvent, not a lubricant |
| Lucas Fuel Treatment | WASTE | Lubricity additive in a cleaner’s marketing. Techron does the actual cleaning job |
| ZDDP supplement | ONLY IF | 5VZ-FE = shim-over-bucket DOHC, not flat-tappet — doesn’t need extra ZDDP. If ticking: run Rotella T4/T6 or Valvoline VR1 instead |
| High-mileage oil | WORTH IT | Seal-conditioner esters are real chemistry for valve-stem-seal seepage (cold-start blue puff); won’t fix a torn seal |
| Water Wetter | WASTE | Only helps on straight water (racetrack). On normal 50/50 mix: “minimal effect” |
| LSD friction modifier | WASTE | Open diff confirmed (factory locker = 1998+). No clutch pack = nothing to modulate |
| Marvel Mystery Oil | WASTE | Mineral oil + solvents that evaporate at operating temp. No benefit on fuel-injected V6 |
| R150F trans additive | SKIP | No credible R150F-specific product exists. Just clean GL-4 75W-90 (Redline MT-90 or Amsoil MTG) |

| Lower ball joints | GENUINE TOYOTA ONLY | Cheap aftermarket LBJs fail fast on 1st-gens — documented pattern |
| O2 sensors | DENSO ONLY | OE supplier; aftermarket sensors throw codes on Toyota ECUs |

| Signal | Verdict | Why / what to do |
|---|---|---|
| OIL pressure light | STOP NOW | Engine off within seconds, coast to the shoulder. Check level; do not restart on a lit oil light. No exceptions. |
| TEMP climbing past center | Manage, then stop | A/C off, heater FULL blast, ease off. Still climbing = shoulder, off, 30-min wait. Never open the cap warm (13 psi). |
| BATTERY light | Limited range | On this engine the alternator belt ALSO drives the fan — check it at the next exit. Belt intact = battery alone runs the distributor + EFI for a short sprint; everything off, straight to parts. Watch the temp gauge the whole way. |
| BRAKE light on | Check now | Handbrake fully down? Then it's fluid level — check the reservoir at the next stop. Low + soft pedal = leak: park it. |
| Check engine — steady | Drive normal | Note it, scan when home (P0325/P0330 = the known knock-sensor pattern; timing pulled, not danger). |
| Check engine — FLASHING | Ease off | Active misfire. No highway pulls, gentle throttle home or to a shop. |
| Sudden flap/squeal + lights or temp | Next exit | A belt let go. Three belts — see which; the fan/alt one is the one that matters most. |
| Cranks strong, fires nothing, after a bang/rattle | Tow, not funeral | Timing belt scenario — this engine is NON-interference (verified). The valves are fine. Tow it home. |
On this truck at 263k: the Denso starter's solenoid contacts are THE classic failure ✓✓. Worse when warm.
Fix: contact + plunger kit $15–40 inside the solenoid — not a $200 starter. Starter = two 14mm bolts; the access trick: ~2 ft of extensions run in from the FRONT of the truck with a swivel — nothing else comes off ✓✓. Torque the solenoid cable nuts properly or the click returns in a week.
Tools: fuse puller (in the lid), multimeter, screwdriver.
Immediately: A/C off, heater on FULL (it's an auxiliary radiator), pull over if it keeps climbing, engine off, wait 30 min before opening anything ✓✓.
Know this engine: the water pump is TIMING-belt driven — accessory belts can't kill it. But the alternator belt drives the FAN: shredded belt = no fan at idle ✓✓.
Tension ✓✓: alternator = 14mm pivot up top, 12mm lock + adjuster from below · A/C = 14mm lock + adjuster above the crossmember · PS = two 14mm wrenches + adjuster near the return line. Sharpie the adjuster positions before loosening. Belts walk over the fan blades — the fan stays on. ~45 min for all three.
Fresh-rebuild context: first suspects are clip seating, phasing, lost weights — in that order.
This truck's rear risk: 2010 service + pinion leak next door. Pull drums (two M8 bolts in the jack holes), peel wheel-cylinder boots (wet = replace), and gear-oil-soaked shoes get replaced, never cleaned ✓✓. Adjust: star wheel tight, back ~15 notches. The self-adjusters only ratchet via the handbrake — use it daily ✓✓.
How it works: the lever shifts the case mechanically; the FRONT diff locks via a vacuum actuator fed by two VSVs ✓✓. Flashing light = case shifted, front diff never locked.
Tools: pliers, spare vacuum hose, Mityvac if owned.

| Job | Verdict | The gold |
|---|---|---|
| Drive belts ×3 | EASY · 45 min | Sharpie adjusters first · belts walk over the fan · out: alt→A/C→PS |
| Fuel filter | EASY | Unbolt the 10mm line brackets for slack — don't fight rigid lines |
| Rear shoes | EASY | M8 jack bolts · star wheel −15 notches · handbrake = the adjuster |
| Thermostat / radiator | EASY | 3 bolts @ 14 ft-lb · jiggle valve per housing mark · bundle cap + hoses |
| Valve cover gaskets | TEDIOUS, not hard | Tape-wrap the brittle driver-side harness channel BEFORE lifting it — it shatters and rains shards into the head |
| Starter contacts | EASY on the bench | Access = 2 ft of extensions from the FRONT + swivel · torque the cable nuts |
| Slip yoke + zerks | MINUTES | Hit every fitting on the shaft; returning clunk = hand-pack the yoke |
| Timing belt + pump | HARD · 6–14 hr first time | 217 ft-lb crank bolt = the boss; impact wrench trivializes it; non-interference = snap strands, never grenades |
| Knock sensors | HARD | Buy sensors + NEW harness + all gaskets BEFORE opening; never re-bury a 30-yr harness |
| Heater core | BRUTAL | No shortcut exists — full dash; bag + label every screw; evac A/C first |
| Rear axle seal + bearing | PRESS WORK | Seal + bearing + soaked shoes as one package + clear the breather |
| Pinion seal (B1) | TRAP = preload | Mark, count, measure, return exactly — the seal itself is trivial |
| Fastener | Threat level | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust manifold studs | WILL snap | “I plan on stripping threads every time.” Weld-a-nut = best extraction. Paraffin wax trick: heat red, touch candle to joint — wax wicks into threads by capillary. |
| Brake bleeder screws | Snap = new caliper | Real Tacoma case: 2 hrs drilling, bought new caliper ($240–270). Have replacement wheel cylinders on the bench as insurance. Anti-seize on reinstall. |
| Drum brake adjusters | Seize solid if parking brake never used | PB Blaster (not WD-40). Hold actuator lever OFF the star wheel with one screwdriver while turning with a second. Use the parking brake daily — it’s the only thing that exercises these. |
| Spark plugs in aluminum heads | Cross-thread = Time-Sert | COLD engine only. Hand-start with fingers. Resistance early = back out. Time-Sert (not Heli-Coil) if stripped — Heli-Coil tang can drop into the cylinder. |
| O2 sensors | Seize into the bung | Disconnect electrical FIRST. Warm manifold + anti-seize soak 30 min before turning. 22mm slotted sensor socket. Anti-seize on reinstall — always. |
| Brake line fittings | Round off instantly | Flare-nut wrench ONLY — never open-end. Small tighten first to crack the rust seal, then loosen. |
| Sway bar end links | Heat is the turning point | PB daily for a week. If heat+penetrant fails, cutting with angle grinder = accepted normal outcome. MOOG “Problem Solver” links avoid the OEM strip-out on reinstall. |
| Transfer case plugs | Rounded = weld-a-nut | If drain plug won’t budge: vacuum extractor through the fill port as a workaround. Ground the welder close — stray current through electronics. |
| Body mount bolts | Surface rust = tip of the iceberg | “Walk it out” — loosen ¼ turn, tighten slightly, loosen more. Works oil deeper into newly exposed threads. |
| Bed bolts | Notorious for rusting | Stainless steel replacement = best long-term fix. Anti-seize alone “delays it a little, that’s about it.” |
| System | The threat | The move | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame | Rusts from INSIDE out — 95–00 CSP expired | POR-15 on active rust (needs rust porosity) + Fluid Film annually (stays wet, wand into box sections, fall application). NEVER rubberized undercoat — traps salt under chips. | $50–70 |
| Timing belt | NON-INTERFERENCE (stranded, not destroyed). 90k/7yr official, many do 60k. Belt AGE matters as much as miles. | Plan the job; impact wrench trivializes the crank bolt. Bundle water pump + tensioner + idler. | $200–350 DIY |
| Cooling: radiator | Plastic end tanks crack ~125k/12yr. Unrepairable. | Replace with cap + hoses + t-stat as a bundle. Manual trans = no ATF cooler lines (easier). | $120–180 |
| Cooling: oil cooler O-ring | O-rings harden → fail in WINTER specifically (thermal cycling + cold-start pressure). | “Replace at earliest opportunity” — 1st-gen V6 veteran advice. | $10–20 |
| Cooling: heater hose tee | Buried plastic tee at the firewall — cracks with age. | Dorman 47112 metal replacement. Do it during any coolant job while drained. | $8 |
| Cooling: bypass hose | Hidden behind the timing cover. Buried ticking time bomb. | Replace during timing belt service — you’re already in there. | $10 |
| Valve cover gaskets | #1 5VZ-FE oil leak. Weeps oil into spark plug wells. | OEM 11213-62020, full kit JVS-10420-US. Do half-moon plugs + distributor O-ring same time. | $30–50 |
| Distributor O-ring | Confirmed common leak alongside valve covers. | Replace while doing valve cover gaskets — same job, same mess. | $5 |
| Rear main seal | Pretty rare on 5VZ-FE. Diagnose: inspect flexplate through bellhousing cover. | Only if leaking — don’t fix preemptively. | — |
| Valve clearance | Shim-over-bucket, check at 60k (you’re 63k past due at 263k). | Check; adjust only if out of spec. Requires cam removal. | $0–100 |
| Starter | Click-no-crank, worse hot = solenoid contacts, not the motor. | Distinguish heat soak from worn contacts from ignition-module hot-start issue. Contact kit $15–40 vs full starter $200. | $15–40 |
