  1. Sort forever: MOOG 269 = 27mm caps, clips OUTSIDE → Big O section. MOOG 287 = 29mm caps, clips INSIDE → factory section. (Factory spec: 29mm inside-clip — Spicer 5-1510X class. FSM-verified.)
  2. Pull all four caps off each new joint: needles standing upright, packed in grease. One tipped needle = destroyed joint at first press.
  3. Cross into the yoke, start ONE cap by hand, dead square.
  4. Press slowly — feed the cross INTO the cap so the trunnion supports the needles.
  5. Cap tilts → STOP. Back out, restart. Forcing scores the bore.
  6. Press to clip depth; seat the clip until it clicks into its groove. Half-seated clips walk out at speed.
  7. Opposite cap, same drill. Then the second axis.
  8. Flex test: every finished joint must swing with finger pressure. Stiff = sharp hammer tap on the yoke ears, re-test.
A binding joint self-destructs. Never install one stiff.

  1. Photograph the stack before touching: bearing, cushion, slingers — which way each faces. FSM note: bearing cutout faces the REAR.
  2. Splitter behind the old bearing's inner race, clamp closed.
  3. Puller on the splitter plate, crank it off steadily.
  4. Inspect the shaft seat: no gouges, no bluing. Light emery only.
  5. New SKF on, same orientation as the photo.
  6. Press by the INNER RACE ONLY to the shoulder.
  7. Seat check: zero gap. Spin check: smooth, quiet, zero grit.
One hit on the outer race or rubber = dead bearing (brinelling — it hums within weeks).

Job card
  1. Coat the slip splines with MOLY grease (molybdenum-disulfide lithium NLGI 2 — FSM spec; center-flange splines get plain MP grease).
  2. Line the halves up on the slip-spline paint marks — exactly as they came apart. One spline off = vibration you can’t torque away.
  3. Sanity check: the yokes at both ends of each section sit in the same plane.
  4. Washer on, NEW locknut on. The old nut was cooked — barely came off. Always a new nut for this job.
  5. The locknut ritual (FSM96 PR-13, verified in 3 editions):
    • Step 1 — SEAT: torque to 181 N·m (134 ft-lb). This presses the bearing fully home against the shoulder.
    • Step 2 — LOOSEN: back the nut ALL the way off. This releases the over-preload from seating.
    • Step 3 — FINAL: re-torque to 69 N·m (51 ft-lb). This is the real running preload.
    • Step 4 — STAKE: punch the nut’s collar into the shaft groove so it can never back off. Only works with a new nut — used collars don’t grip.
    Why three steps: 134 alone over-preloads the bearing (kills it within months). 51 alone never seats it — the bearing sits loose and walks. The loosen-then-retorque resets the preload to the correct running value after the bearing is seated. Skipping ANY step destroys the new bearing.
  6. Final look: marks aligned, nut staked, bearing spins free by hand with zero grit.
Floor method — no vice, no bench

You’re torquing a nut on a shaft lying on the ground. The shaft wants to spin. Fix it:

  1. Stick a bolt through one of the flange yoke’s bolt holes at either end of the shaft.
  2. Wedge that bolt against something heavy and immovable — jackstand base, cinder block, wheel chock, or the truck’s own wheel.
  3. Torque the locknut with a 1/2″ drive torque wrench and the correct socket. The bolt-against-block holds the shaft still.
  4. Re-position the bolt for each step of the ritual (seat, loosen, final). The shaft will try to spin differently each time.

  • Trans tailshaft seal: shine a light where the driveshaft meets the R150F output — wetness / fresh oil trail = rear seal is going. Catch it now; the shaft is already out.
  • T-case output seal: same check at the transfer case flange. Grab the yoke and rock it — any play = output bearing, not just a seal.
  • Exhaust hangers: jiggle every rubber isolator from the manifold back. Cracked / stretched / missing = the exhaust sags onto the driveshaft or frame. 30-year rubber rots.
  • E-brake cable: trace the full run. Where it passes through frame brackets is where it corrodes and binds. Spray with penetrant if stiff.
  • Frame — FULL LENGTH: you are under the truck with a light and time. Walk every rail, crossmember, and the fish-plate repair from the prior owner. Photograph anything new. This is the inspection you can’t do on a quick oil change.

  3. Pump until it runs back out of the fill hole — FSM: level within 5mm of the hole's bottom edge. Capacity from empty: 2.05 L / 2.2 qt (the '96 books' long-wheelbase Xtracab row — not the 2.55 forums quote).
  4. Plug back at 49 N·m (36 ft-lb). Wipe the housing clean — it's your leak detector.
  5. Write down how much it took. Quarts = the leak is worse than it looks, B1 moves up.

  2. Drain plug out (14mm hex, bottom of pan). ~10 min drain.
  3. Plug back with a NEW crush washer — ~29 ft-lb , firm not gorilla (aluminum pan).
  4. Filter off — low on the driver's-side front of the block. Foil the crossmember, oil runs down it. Confirm the old gasket came off with the filter.
  5. Oil the new gasket, spin on hand-tight + ¾ turn.
  6. Fill 5 qt of Valvoline High Mileage 5W-30 (conventional w/ seal conditioners). Start 30 sec, kill, check for drips.
  7. Wait 2 min, dipstick, top to FULL — lands ~5.5 qt (5.2 L — '96 OM confirms 5.5 for 4WD V6; the 5.7 figure is 2WD).

  • Drain plug threads: inspect for aluminum galling. If washer fused to pan, switch to copper washer or dab copper anti-seize on washer face next time.
  • Metal in oil: wipe the drain plug magnet — fine dust = normal wear; flakes/chunks = note the size and photograph.
  • Filter housing O-ring: the oval gasket between the filter housing and the block weeps on 5VZ-FE. Wipe the area, check at next change.
  • Exhaust heat shields: rattle check. Loose shields buzz at specific RPMs and get blamed on exhaust leaks.
  • Other fluid leaks: eyes on trans, t-case, PS pump, brake lines while underneath with the light.

  1. Stone cold. Open reservoir + radiator cap. Look at the color — this decides everything.
  2. GREEN (likely): top with pre-diluted green/universal. Never pour red onto green — mixed chemistries can gel.

  4. Reservoir to FULL; radiator to the neck.
  5. Tape-mark the level. Weekly checks ×2 weeks; dropping with no puddle = pressure test.
  6. C1 (flush) converts the whole system to proper RED next month and closes this file.

  1. Paint-mark the rear flange, unbolt, drop the shaft's rear (~30 min now).
  2. Record three things BEFORE any wrench: nut-to-pinion paint mark · exposed thread count · rolling preload in inch-pounds (write it down). FSM sanity band for reused bearings: 4.3–6.9 in-lb.
  3. Hold the flange (2 old bolts + bar), breaker-bar the staked nut off.
  4. Flange off; pry the old seal — don't gouge the bore.
  5. New seal National 710525 in square, tap around its face, grease the lip.
  6. Flange on. NEW nut USA33160, threads OILED with hypoid oil (FSM — dry threads read high and under-crush). Tighten to the exact mark + thread count. Approach slow.
  7. Re-measure preload — matches your number = done. Below: creep a few degrees at a time. NEVER pass the mark.
  8. Clear the axle breather while under there — a clogged breather pressurizes the housing and kills new seals.
  9. Stake the nut. Shaft back on its marks, 54 ft-lb, top the diff.
FSM verbatim: never back the nut off to reduce preload. Overshoot = new crush spacer + full setup. (FSM-strict method: new spacer, seat nut at 147 N·m, creep in ≤13 N·m steps, absolute max 451 N·m. The mark-and-return field method avoids all that — that's why we mark.)

  • Axle breather: already in the steps — but also: blow through it to confirm it’s actually clear, not just loosened. Clogged breather = pressurized housing = kills the new seal.
  • Axle seals: peek inside both brake drums (two M8 jack bolts). Oil inside = axle seal leaking alongside the pinion. Gear oil = thick, strong smell; brake fluid = faint. Know which one before assuming.
  • Rear brake lines: follow both hard lines from the junction block to each wheel cylinder. Rust bubbles = replacement before they burst under pressure.
  • Diff magnet: when you top the diff, pull the drain plug magnet first. Fine fuzz = normal. Chunks = bearings talking. Photograph it.
  • E-brake cable: trace the cable from the lever to the rear backing plates while underneath. Frayed/binding = why the parking brake feels weak.

  5. Your NGK 5464 = BKR5EIX-11, verified listed fitment, heat range 5 matching the OEM BKR5EKB-11, pre-gapped 1.1mm/0.044″. Don't re-gap, don't drop, NO anti-seize (plated shells — anti-seize over-torques).
  6. Thread by hand to seat — resistance early = back out, restart.
  7. Torque 18 N·m (13 ft-lb) — FSM-verified.

  • Plug wells: oil pooled around a plug = valve cover gasket weeping into the well. Common 5VZ-FE failure. Note which bank — driver side is usually first.
  • Wire boots: cracked/brittle boots = schedule D4 (cap + rotor + wires). Dielectric grease in each boot on reinstall.
  • Compression test opportunity: plugs out = free access. Healthy 5VZ-FE: ~174 psi stock, 145 psi minimum, 15 psi max spread between cylinders. Wet-test any low cylinder (squirt of oil, retest — jumps up = rings, stays low = valves).
  • Read the old plugs: tan/gray = healthy. Oily = valve seals or rings. White-crusted = lean condition or coolant intrusion. Black/sooty = rich. Note the cylinder number.

  1. Cold. Pan under, petcock open (bottom corner of radiator), drain.
  2. Swap the thermostat while drained — it lives in the water-inlet housing at the LOWER radiator hose; 3 fasteners, 14 ft-lb; jiggle-valve position per the housing mark.
  3. New radiator cap (13 psi).
  4. Fill 50/50 Toyota RED + distilled slow through the radiator neck. System total ~10 qt; a drain-and-fill takes less — buy 2 gal of 50/50.
  5. Burp: nose raised, heater HOT, cap off, idle to temp, squeeze the upper hose, top as it drops.
  6. Re-check after two heat cycles. Green-vs-red question dies here.
Coolant is sweet poison to dogs and cats. Covered pan, wiped spills, sealed jugs.

  • Squeeze every hose: hard/crunchy = schedule replacement. Soft/mushy at the clamp = schedule replacement. Healthy = firm, pliable, no cracks.
  • Heater hose tee: plastic tee at the firewall — cracks with age. Replace with metal Dorman 47112 now while the system is drained. $8 insurance.
  • Water pump weep hole: coolant trail from the weep hole on the pump body = pump bearings dying. This pump is timing-belt-driven — bundle replacement at the next belt job.
  • Fan clutch: cold start should ROAR then quiet. Engine off, spin by hand — some resistance, ≤~1.5 turns. Free-wheeling = dead clutch.
  • Radiator cap pressure test: $35 loaner from O’Reilly. Pump to 13 psi, hold 2 min — drop = leak somewhere.
  • Coolant reservoir: same age-fragile plastic as the radiator tanks. Check for cracks while filling.

  1. Chemistry: Toyota's book allows GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 in the R150F + transfer case; GL-4 is the conservative synchro pick (GL-5's additives can attack brass). Front diff: GL-5 75W-90. Two different jugs.
  2. Per box: crack the FILL plug FIRST — never drain what you can't refill. All plugs 24mm hex.
  3. Drain, inspect the magnet (glitter = normal trace; chunks = a conversation).
  4. Refill to the weep point: trans 2.2 L / 2.3 qt · t-case 1.0 L / 1.1 qt · front diff 1.15 L / 1.2 qt (ADD).
  5. Plug torques: trans + t-case fill/drain 27 ft-lb; front diff fill 29, drain 48 ft-lb.

  • Iron law: crack the FILL plug FIRST on every box. If you drain and can’t refill, you’re towing.
  • Drain magnet metal analysis: fine gray paste = normal. Glitter = bearings shedding. Bronze chips in trans = synchro wear. Photograph each plug’s catch.
  • Pinion seal check: while under the rear, look at the pinion flange for fresh wet oil. Catching it early prevents the low-diff-on-highway disaster.
  • Axle breather: top of the diff housing. Blow through it to confirm flow. Clogged = pressurized housing = blows seals.
  • T-case fill plug warning: these seize hard between services. Use a 6-point 24mm socket, not 12-point. If rounded: weld-a-nut extraction or vacuum extractor through the fill port.
  • GL-4 vs GL-5: GL-4 for trans + t-case (brass synchros). GL-5 for diffs. Two different jugs. Redline MT-90 or Amsoil MTG = proven GL-4 picks for the R150F.

  1. Context: last documented touch 2010 + a pinion leak next door. This is a look.
  2. Axle on stands, wheels off, parking brake OFF.
  3. Drum stuck? Two M8 bolts into the drum's jack holes, turn evenly — it presses itself off. It registers on the hub lip — don't pry the backing plate.
  4. Measure lining: FSM min 1.0mm (shop practice: replace at ~2mm). Peel the wheel-cylinder boot edges: any wetness = replace cylinders with the shoes.
  5. Gear-oil-soaked shoes = replace, period — cleaning never works. Soaked shoes also point at axle seals (and the breather).
  6. Good = dust out (brake cleaner, never compressed air), adjust: star wheel tight till the drum locks, back off ~15 notches.
  7. Parking brake: 12–18 clicks at the lever. Use the handbrake daily — it's the only thing that ratchets the self-adjusters on these.

  • Parking brake cables: trace from lever to each backing plate — frayed / binding / corroded = why the parking brake feels weak AND why the self-adjusters never ratchet.
  • Brake lines: follow both hard lines from the junction block to each wheel. Rust bubbles on tubing = replace before they burst. Flare-nut wrenches only on the fittings — open-end rounds them.
  • Backing plates: check for bends, cracks, rust-through. A bent plate lets water and road grit past the drums.
  • Axle seal check: gear oil inside the drum = axle seal leaking (thick, strong sulfur smell). Brake fluid = wheel cylinder (faint, almost no smell). Know which one before replacing shoes.
  • Bleeder screws: do NOT try to open unless you plan to bleed. If you do: soak with PB Blaster first, have replacement wheel cylinders on the bench as insurance. Snapped bleeder = new cylinder.
  • Spring & hardware kit: replace the full brake spring + hardware kit while shoes are off — 30-year springs lose tension and cause dragging / uneven wear. Cheap insurance.
  • Star-wheel adjuster: if seized, soak with PB Blaster (not WD-40 — it evaporates). FSM method: match shoe-to-drum clearance 0.6 mm, then cycle parking brake to let the auto-adjuster set it.

Hybrid driveshaft. Factory section: 29mm inside-clip joints (MOOG 287, Spicer 5-1510X class — FSM-verified factory spec). Big O replacement section: 27mm outside-clip (MOOG 269). Catalogs only list the factory joint. Every future order = BOTH sizes, from this page.

Pinion seal — confirmed Aug 2026. Oil flung across the bed underside; Mason's “do the fluids” hint was him telling on it. Job B1 with FSM numbers on record. Diff checked every 2 weeks until done.
Trap
Coolant probably GREEN (prior-owner conversion). Match color when topping (A12); never mix; C1 converts back to RED.

Two staked single-use nuts in the driveline: pinion nut + center locknut (whose install is the 3-step 134→loosen→51 ritual). Dealer items, new every time.
